How the Pandemic Is Affecting Service of Process

The pandemic is affecting all of our lives in a million unexpected ways, and service of process is no different. Even though the rules about service of process have not changed, the pandemic has presented some unique challenges and some benefits for process servers. Here are some of the ways that COVID-19 is affecting process service.

More people are spending more time at home.

A lot of people are laid off or working from home right now. Those same people are trying to limit their time out in public, doing shopping only once a week or getting everything delivered. That means that you are very likely able to get papers served in your case very quickly if the service is on an individual.

Brick and mortar businesses are closed.

If the company you are suing currently doesn’t have an open brick and mortar location, you could have a very hard time getting them served in your civil matter. There are specific rules about who in a company can be served and where they can be served. It may be possible to serve a registered agent or company officer at their home if they are working remotely, but you may have to get an exception granted from the courts first.

People aren’t really going anywhere.

People aren’t just avoiding traveling in their community or state or shopping in stores. Most of the country has simply paused, with few people moving or buying homes. That means that even if you don’t have a good address for the person who needs to be served, it is much more likely that they can be found easily.

If you have papers that you need served, contact us today for fast service during the pandemic.
